Vocational education

​At Barcaldine Prep-12 State School, the students have a range of opportunities to be involved in Vocational Education Training (VET). 

The school offers a range of authority and non-authority subjects and also participates in a range of other learning programs, offered through:

  • Brisbane School of Distant Education (BSODE) - subjects have to be discussed with a member of leadership.

  • Participation in 30 work experience opportunities (to align with the SET Plan and future career pathways).

  • Participation in Year 10 work experience (in the local area) and Year 11 Work Experience in Brisbane.

  • Participation in School Based Traineeships (SBT); these are undertaken in from Year 11 as, SBTs are two years in duration.

  • Participation in School Based Apprenticeships (SBAs); these can be undertaken from year 10, as the SBA can be for a duration of the remaining semesters.

  • ​​​Participation in TAFE courses or courses offered through External Registered Training Organisation (RTOs).

  • Possibilities are numerous, however the Queensland Curriculum & ​Assessment Authority (QCAA) requirements must be first met.


VET in the West

VET in the West is a joint agreement between Longreach State High School, Barcaldine P-12 State School, Winton State School and Aramac P-10 State School. 

 

Longreach State High School as a nationally registered provider support for the deliver of courses on the Longreach State High School scope. Courses include:

  • Certificate I in Agfo​od Operations (AHC10216) 
    • Currently delivered at Barcaldine P-12 State School
  • Certificate II in Tourism (SIT20116)
  • Certificate II in Applied Digital Technologies (ICT20120)
      • Currently delivered at Barcaldine P-12 State School
  • Certificate II in Rural Operations (AHC21216)
    • Currently delivered at Barcaldine P-12 State School
    • Currently delivered at Winton P-12 State School
  • Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways (FSK20119) 
    • Currently delivered at Barcaldine P-12 State School
    • Currently delivered at Winton P-12 State School

These schools have the opportunity to deliver these courses to their students for no fees on their school site. Longreach State High School is responsible for the course and issuance of qualifications. Each school will provide the trainers conduct training, assessment and recruitment on behalf of Longreach State High School.

Future planning for the VET in the West project includes delivery of courses that meet local industry needs including rural skill qualifications.​
